Start-ups

The total number of start-ups fluctuates from year to year. In 2020, Belgium had 119,744 start-ups. This number has decreased by 2.03% compared to 2019, when 120,980 companies were founded. In 2018, 115,042 start-ups took the plunge. The effect of the coronavirus pandemic on the number of start-ups will become more visible in the coming months of 2021. You can follow the evolution closely below.

Bankruptcies

It is an understatement to say that many companies have had a difficult year. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic forced companies to close their doors for a certain period. Despite the pandemic, only 8,033 companies were declared bankrupt. This is a decrease of no less than 32.44% compared to 2019, when Belgium counted 11,889 bankruptcies. It remains to be seen whether the number of bankruptcies will increase this year, but the future does not bode well. Stay tuned for the exact figures via the chart below.

Discontinuations

The number of companies that discontinued their operations in 2020 and 2019 has decreased from 94,529 to 83,770 discontinuations, respectively. In 2021, the number of discontinuations is decreasing. In January there were 8,440 discontinuations and in February 5,410. See the graph below for the monthly evolution.
